ABOUT US

Founded by Hlulani Masingi in 2016 as a Facebook Page, Shangazine is a brand new online lifestyle magazine that aims to celebrate Xitsonga as a world-class culture. It gathers inspiration from Xitsonga people and spreads it across the globe in an attempt to promote the cultural group’s contemporary and traditional way of living. It shares the tribe’s magnifiscent regalia and lifestyle, inspiring articles and rich yet fun content that is encouraging and exceptional about Xitsonga people. With its name being derived from the words shangaan and magazine – Shangazine’s vision is to take back the word “Shangaan” which has been used to degrade many Xitsonga people in South Africa and celebrate it positively.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to elevate the Xitsonga way of living to mainstream media and beyond as our culture and language have been marginalised for a very long time.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE

Apart from showcasing the Xitsonga people’s colourful regalia, music, language and culture to the rest of the world, we seek to edutain non-Xitsonga speakers about the Xitsonga culture while also tapping into worldwide lifestyle trends that are inclusive of everyone. Therefore our dissemination language is mainly English with a bit of code-switching and code-mixing between English and Xitsonga. This is to enable those who lack any knowledge about Xitsonga people to learn more about their way of living. We also showcase how Xitsonga people are evolving with the times and connecting with those not belonging in the cultural group without losing our cultural roots and sense of origin.
